Regen und Traufe 26
Christiane Möbus‘s works combine conceptual rigour and aesthetic conciseness. In her sculptures, the artist often uses found materials and elements, which interact with each other and with the titles of the works to weave dense, poetic meanings. The puns in the titles often refer to fairy tales, common metaphors or idioms. This is also the case with “Regen und Traufe” (Rain and Eaves) – a variation on the German expression for “out of the frying pan into the fire” which describes a transition from one evil to an even greater one. The two flat, metal bowls that make up the sculpture come together to form an elegant structure. Depending on the weather, this fills with rainwater, which slowly drains away through the small holes in both sides of the bowls. Thus on the one hand, the title refers specifically to the course of the flowing rainwater; on the other hand, it leads to nothing and leaves room for the viewer‘s personal projections and interpretations. After studying at the HBK Braunschweig,
Christiane Möbus spent time in New York in the early 1970s, where she took part in groundbreaking group exhibitions. Since then, she has widely exhibited her work throughout Europe. Möbus was a professor at the UdK Berlin from 1990 to 2014.
